1:50 Crawler Crane Models – the smallest category with the largest machines
Crawler cranes are the heavyweights among crane models. They don't drive to the construction site; they are transported there and assembled on-site. This is precisely what makes them challenging as models – and limits the selection: we have five models currently in stock.
Two types that should not be confused
Lattice boom crawler cranes feature an open truss boom that is assembled in segments. The Liebherr LR 1280 Litronic and the LR 1400 SX belong to this category, as does the Sennebogen 5500 G-series. With these models, the boom is only created during assembly.
Telescopic crawler cranes like the Liebherr LTR 1220 have a telescopic boom on a crawler undercarriage instead. They combine the rapid operational readiness of a mobile crane with the off-road capability of a crawler.
The item number determines the paint scheme
The LTR 1220 is available from Conrad in two customer versions: 2746/05 for WIESBAUER and 2746/07 for BMS Heavy Cranes. The LR 1280 bears the colors of PRANGL as 2734/0. Conrad uses a forward slash for numbering, WSI uses a hyphen – the LR 1400 SX is listed there as 54-2015.
What to look for
The lattice boom: In good models, it consists of individual segments that can be plugged together. Plastic here is not a defect, but a necessity – a lattice boom made of die-cast zinc would cause the model to tip over due to its own weight.
The ballast: Crawler cranes operate with central and superstructure ballast. Whether this is included and whether it can be attached determines how complete the assembled model looks.
Space: This is the point most people underestimate. A 1:50 scale lattice boom crawler crane with an extended boom reaches over a meter in height. If you don't have the display case height, you can display it in its transport state – this is also a legitimate display option.
Buying crawler crane models – in a nutshell
