1:50 loader crane truck models – when the vehicle unloads itself

A loader crane truck is two machines in one: transport vehicle and crane. It drives the load to the construction site and lifts it off the vehicle itself – without the need for a second crane to arrive. In model form, this means twice as many moving parts as a normal truck. We have ten available models in stock, all in 1:50 scale.

Three types of cranes

Knuckle boom cranes are located behind the driver's cab and fold up when in transport mode. Palfinger is the strongest brand here – the PK 165.002 TEC 7 appears twice on a Scania R Highline, once for Hofmann and once for Franz Bracht, plus a PK480 TEC on a MAN TGX XXL. A Fassi F1100 sits on a Volvo FH Aero, and an Atlas 145.2 on a Mercedes-Benz Arocs.

Telescopic boom trucks are something different: a full-fledged mobile crane superstructure on a standard truck chassis. We have the Liebherr LTF 1060-4.1 in stock twice – on a Volvo FMX and on a Scania P Low. These models are the bridge between a truck and a crane collection.

Timber cranes are the third type. Three DOLL short timber trucks are on our shelves – on a MAN TGS TN with an EPSILON Q17Z including Masterdrive, on a MAN TGS M in the NEUHAUSER customer livery, and on a MAN TGX XXL. They transport and unload logs using the same vehicle.

Chassis and numbers

Scania leads with three vehicles, plus four MAN, two Volvo, and one Mercedes-Benz. Six models are from WSI, four from Conrad.

WSI uses hyphens for numbering and sorts by category: 01-xxxx and 04-xxxx are commercial vehicles, 51-xxxx are cranes. That is why the LTF 1060-4.1 has a 51-series number, even though it is on a truck – for WSI, it is a crane. The same Scania with Palfinger exists as 01-4672 and 01-5248, the only difference being the paint scheme.

What to look for

The crane arm: It should move at all joints and stay in position. For knuckle boom cranes, this includes the telescopic sections being truly extendable.

The outriggers: Without extended outriggers, the real-life version would tip over – on the model, they should therefore be movable and actually support the vehicle.

The load: Some models come with a container or logs, others are empty. A crane without a load looks unfinished – you can find suitable loads in the accessories section.

Buying loader crane trucks – in a nutshell

1:50 scale, die-cast zinc, movable crane arm, extendable outriggers, freight forwarder liveries. Prices currently range from around €120 for the Atlas on Arocs to €225 for the DOLL short timber truck on a MAN TGX XXL. In a broader sense, you can find the same vehicles among the truck models; models that move heavier loads can be found among the mobile cranes and heavy haulage. Shipping from Germany, packed for collectors. Not suitable for children under 14 years of age.
