Crane models in 1:50 – the premier class

No other type of model demands as much from the manufacturer as a crane. A telescopic boom must interlock cleanly in several segments, the cable must run over real pulleys, and the outriggers must actually support the model. A 1:50 scale crane model is therefore less of a collector's item than a functional miniature machine.

Mobile crane, crawler crane, construction crane – what suits you

Mobile cranes are the entry point and the largest group: all-terrain chassis with multiple axles, telescopic booms, often with an additional jib. Those who collect crane companies usually collect here.

Crawler cranes are the heavyweights. Lattice booms instead of telescopic ones, ballast, sometimes over a meter in height when assembled. Demanding to set up, but the centerpiece of any display case.

Mobile construction cranes and tower cranes work on the construction site rather than in heavy transport – and match your construction machinery in scale perfectly.

What to look for when buying

The boom: It should be extendable in all segments and stay in position. A telescope that retracts on its own is the most common annoyance with cheaper models.

Cable routing: Real cable over real pulleys, not just painted on. In good models, the hook can be wound up and down.

The outriggers: Extendable sliding beams with pads. They determine whether the model stands stably with the boom extended.

The material: Die-cast zinc for the chassis and upper carriage. For the lattice boom, plastic is common and also sensible – otherwise the model would tip over due to its own weight.

Do not underestimate space and assembly

A crane model requires more display space than any other machine. With the boom extended, it quickly gains height; with the outriggers extended, it takes up width. If you are short on space, display the crane in transport condition – this is also a legitimate display choice and even looks better next to a lowboy trailer.
