COBI Building Blocks – Models you build first and display later
COBI is the bridge between a building kit and a collector's model. Unlike the die-cast models in the rest of our range, the process starts with assembly instructions, but ends with an object that belongs in the same display case. We currently have around 33 kits in stock.
Three worlds
Aviation is the largest group, with 25 kits. The core consists of fighter planes and jets – such as the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, Panavia Tornado, Eurofighter Typhoon, and Lockheed C-130 Hercules. In addition, there are four commercial aircraft, including the Boeing 747 as Air Force One and the Concorde G-BBDG, as well as one space model: the Space Shuttle Atlantis.
Vehicles includes eight kits with a clear focus on European classics: four Opel models, two Maseratis, and two GDR vehicles – the Trabant 601 and Barkas B1000, both in police livery.
Trains consist of two steam locomotives of the DR BR 52 class (6282 and 6283) – the largest and most expensive kits in our range.
The scale is in the title, and it is more important than you think
COBI does not build in a uniform scale. Aircraft are predominantly 1:48, vehicles 1:35, individual cars 1:12, and commercial aircraft 1:144. This means: Two models of the same original can be completely different sizes. We carry two versions of the Opel Rekord C "Black Widow" – as kit 24333 in 1:12 for €128 and as 24597 in 1:35 for €15. Same car, two completely different kits.
That is why we include the scale in every title. If you want to curate a uniform display case, you should choose based on that rather than the price.
The article number
COBI uses numbers without slashes: four digits for aircraft and locomotives (5920 for the F-14 Tomcat, 6282 for the BR 52), and five digits for cars and commercial aircraft (24541 for the Trabant, 26610 for Air Force One). Here too, the same original may appear in several versions – the Eurofighter Typhoon is available as 5843 "GiNA," 5848 "Typhoon G," and 5849 "F2000."
What to look for in a kit
Printed parts instead of stickers: COBI prints markings, national emblems, and lettering directly onto the bricks. This is the difference that is still visible after five years on the shelf.
Space requirements after assembly: A jet in 1:48 scale has a significant wingspan. Plan for the finished size, not the box size.
The box: For building kits, the box is part of the collector's value – unlike a finished model, it also serves as the storage place for spare parts and instructions.
